Higher gauge theory — differential versus integral formulation

چکیده
The term higher gauge theory refers to the generalization of gauge theory to a theory of connections at two levels, essentially given by 1and 2-forms. So far, there have been two approaches to this subject. The differential picture uses non-Abelian 1and 2-forms in order to generalize the connection 1-form of a conventional gauge theory to the next level. The integral picture makes use of curves and surfaces labeled with elements of non-Abelian groups and generalizes the formulation of gauge theory in terms of parallel transports. We recall how to circumvent the classic no-go theorems in order to define nonAbelian surface ordered products in the integral picture. We then derive the differential picture from the integral formulation under the assumption that the curve and surface labels depend smoothly on the position of the curves and surfaces. We show that some aspects of the no-go theorems are still present in the differential (but not in the integral) picture. This implies a substantial structural difference between non-perturbative and perturbative approaches to higher gauge theory. We finally demonstrate that higher gauge theory provides a geometrical explanation for the extended topological symmetry of BF -theory in both pictures. A pr 2 00 1 MASS FROM GAUGE AVERAGING IN FIELD THEORY
In the path-integral formulation of gauge theories the gauge-averaging functional may be chosen to be of non-local nature, and this leads to a non-local formalism, with invertible integro-differential operators on field perturbations. This paper derives the form of integral kernels in the gauge-averaging functional (both local and non-local) for which a mass term is obtained in the one-loop sem...
متن کاملJ an 2 00 1 Mass Generation of Nonlocal Field Theory
The possibility is investigated that a nonlocal formulation of gauge theories may provide an alternative mechanism for the generation of mass. For this purpose, a path-integral approach is used, with gauge-averaging term leading to an invertible integro-differential operator on field disturbances and to a mass term in the semiclassical Lagrangian. It is therefore shown that suitable choices of ...

Using the geometric deenition of the topological charge we decompose the path integral of 2-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory into topological sectors. In a Monte Carlo simulation we compute the average value of the action as well as the distribution of its values for each sector separately. These numbers are compared with analytic lower bounds of the action which are relevant for classical...
متن کاملDifferential Geometrical Formulation of Gauge Theory of Gravity
Differential geometric formulation of quantum gauge theory of gravity is studied in this paper. The quantum gauge theory of gravity which is proposed in the references hep-th/0109145 and hep-th/0112062 is formulated completely in the framework of traditional quantum field theory. In order to study the relationship between quantum gauge theory of gravity and traditional quantum gravity which is ...

We consider the covariant quantization of generalized abelian gauge theories on a closed and compact n-dimensional manifold whose space of gauge invariant fields is the abelian group of CheegerSimons differential characters. The space of gauge fields is shown to be a non-trivial bundle over the orbits of the subgroup of smooth Cheeger-Simons differential characters. Furthermore each orbit itsel...
